Compression Fractures are fractures in the vertebrae due to brittleness of bone, car accidents, or a major fall where the vertebrae have compressed.
In this article we will discuss who typically gets compression fractures, what they are, and what they feel like.
Who Typically gets a Compression Fracture?
Compression fractures are more common with people who have existing osteoporosis or osteopenia – Meaning weakness in the bones. This is seen more often in women who are getting older but it’s also seen in men. If there is existing weakness in the bones, a fall or lifting heavily may prompt the fracture to occur.
We also see compression fractures resulting from acute accidents such as car accidents.
What are Compression Fractures?
Due to the slight curvature of each vertebrae, when the spine suffers heavy pressure on it to compress, the vertebrae themselves may break and form a wedge shape or triangular shape.

What does a Compression Fracture Feel Like?
Compression fractures that happen suddenly may occur during lifting a heavy object, an accident or fall. You may hear a popping sound followed by severe pain in the back. This pain may be described as sharp shooting pain and perhaps even go across the back.
You may notice as you move slightly from side to side when sitting that along with the severe pain, it’s almost as if your muscles are “catching” on something.
What to Expect with Treatment
We would first order an MRI to determine if you are experiencing a compression fracture, then move on to treatment from there. One possible treatment is Kyphoplasty.
